About Michael Chesley Johnson

Join Michael for a springtime painting retreat in beautiful Zion National Park!

Although there will be no formal instruction, Michael will guide you to locations and offer daily critiques. You can paint along with Michael or watch him paint as a demonstration. (Michael will work in oil or pastel, but all media are welcome.) This workshop is for the serious intermediate or advanced plein air painter who has previously studied with Michael; newcomers will be put on a waiting list and then invited to fill in as space becomes available.

Price $1100. (Non-painting spouse or partner welcome at $300 additional.) Price includes breakfast and lunch every day and lodging. Contact Michael at mcj.painter@gmail.com.

Guests arrive the afternoon/evening of Saturday, April 22, and depart after breakfast on Saturday, April 29.

We will lodge at a house in Springdale, UT, where we held the last two retreats. The accomodations were wonderful. We rose early for breakfast critiques, and then headed off for a morning of painting. We generally used the park shuttle buses, which were very convenient and a short walk from the house. Some of us stayed on-location to paint longer; others returned home for lunch. Afternoons, some of us painted, while others explored. Dinners were either communal or we went out to one of Springdale's fine restaurants.

Zion National Park is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, Frederick Church, Maynard Dixon, Franz Bischoff and many other artists have painted Zion Canyon. Michael, who participated in the 2011 "In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran" plein air invitational and led successful painting retreats in 2012 and 2014, will share many of the best painting spots.

Zion National Park is about 1.5 hours from St George, Utah, and about 3 hours from Las Vegas, Nevada.
